Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya, and is commonly referred to as the city in the sun. Besides these, it has much to offer tourists and they will certainly never forget a visit to this fascinating city while on a
Safari to Kenya. Below are some the spots that are worth calling on.
Bomas of Kenya
Tourists are treated to many traditional songs and dances by dancers at the Bomas of Kenya. All these are performed by professional dancers, clad in the traditional attire of the different tribes in Kenya. Performances range from all seasons, that call for dances and song in African cultures be it funerals, harvest time, circumcision, marriage and many other ceremonies. One can also view traditional homesteads of the diverse Kenyan communities, in addition to enjoying traditional Kenyan meals.
Monuments
Numerous monuments have been erected in the streets of Nairobi city. Among them is one of the founding father of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta which is found next to the Kenyatta International Conference Centre which acts as a venue of various corporate and national events. Along Kimathi Street the monument of one of Kenya’s greatest freedom fighters Dedan Kimathi stands dressed in army clothes and weapons in the hands. The statue portrays one who soldiered ahead in the quest for his country’s freedom. About 100m from Kimathi’s monument Tom Mboya’s monument towers high, in the memory a real man of the people. All these monuments provide spectacular sites for taking memorable photos.
Mamba Village
The mamba village hosts scores of crocodiles and it’s a must visit for wildlife lovers. Besides viewing the menacing reptiles at closer quarters, Mamba Village is a fabulous place to have a picnic and lots of other fun. There is also a set time for feeding the crocodiles and this would be so much fun, as the attendants toss meat at the eagerly anticipating reptiles with wide open mouths.
Nairobi National Park
This is the only national park the world has that is next to a city. Despite this, it still acts as a real jungle, being home to lots of wildlife. Four of the big five are found here, with the only exception being the elephant. Various picnic sites are also found here and provide good relaxation spots. Here, bird lovers will also watch lots of birds ranging from the scavenging vultures and eagles to the coy guinea fowls.
Safari walk
The Nairobi Safari Walk is along one edge of the National Park. This hosts numerous enclosed animals and acts as a zoo.
Kenya National Archives
This holds a consolidated history of Kenya. Records dating back to the colonial times will be found here. Two of its three storeys have artifacts, photos of traditional Kenyan societies showing their regalia, cooking methods, architectural designs of traditional houses, war heroes, builders of the Nation fashion and so much more.
National Museum of Kenya
Here you can find all if not most of Kenya’s cultural information. Preserved natural wild animals and birds are also found here. There are also statues and fossils of early man, as Kenya is one of the prime locations where the early man’s remains were discovered. In addition, it houses lots of Kenyan art.
Snake Park
Located just next to the National Museum, the snake park hosts quite a number of reptiles mostly snakes, tortoise, crocodiles and many species of fish. It would be a nice experience to have an underwater view of various species of fish as well as view venomous snakes from closer quarters.
